When it comes to the neighbouring countries, Uruguay borders with Argentina to the southwest and west, with Brazil to the north and northeast, the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast, and Rio de la Plata to the south. An interesting fact about Uruguay is that even though this country has a population of 3.5 million, 2 million of those residents live in the capital and its largest city – Montevideo.
As for its economy, Uruguay is a high-income country and is the leader in South America when it comes to democracy, low perception of corruption, peace, press freedom, prosperity, and size of the middle class. As for the rank on the Human Development Index, Uruguay is the third best-ranked country in South America.
This country is a founding member of the United Nations, OAS, the Non-Alignment Movement, and Mercosur. Finally, it is regarded as one of the socially most progressive countries in Latin America.
