1. Use basic strategy on every hand
Basic strategy tells you the best play for each hand against each dealer upcard. It takes the house edge to about 0.5% at a standard 3:2 table. Keep the chart from our guide on how to play live blackjack open until you know it; live tables give you only a few seconds per decision.
The plays most often got wrong: hit 12 against a dealer 2 or 3, stand on 12 against 4–6, always split aces and eights, never split tens or fives, and never stand on soft 17.
2. Choose the table by its rules

Payout ratio matters more than all other rules together. Check the payout and the other rules in each game's help panel before you play.

3. Decline insurance and keep side bets small
Insurance costs about 7.5% of what you put on it at 6–8 decks. Side bets such as 21+3 and Perfect Pairs also carry far higher edges than the main bet. If you like them, bet a fixed small amount.
4. Size your bets to your bankroll
Pick a session budget and a table whose minimum is a small share of it. A cautious approach is to keep each hand to a small share of the session budget, such as 1–5%. Work out what the session should cost: stake × hands per hour × house edge. At $30 a hand, an example 60 hands an hour and a 0.5% edge, that is $9 an hour on average, while single sessions swing far more.

5. Myths about live blackjack
Live blackjack is rigged. At licensed casinos the cards are real, dealt on camera from a shuffled shoe, and licensed casinos are regulated.
Card counting is easy online. Evolution's regular live blackjack deals from eight decks, so a count moves slowly. See card counting in live blackjack.
New or bad players ruin the table. Another player's decisions change which cards you get, but not the odds. Over time their mistakes help you as often as they hurt you.
The dealer controls the outcome. Dealers follow fixed drawing rules and cannot choose cards.
More players raise the house edge. The edge comes from the rules, not the number of seats filled.
A betting system can beat the game. Martingale and similar systems change bet sizes, not the edge per hand, and table maximums stop the doubling.
6. Read bonus terms before using them on blackjack
Live blackjack can count 10% or less toward bonus wagering, so check the terms. A $100 bonus with 30x wagering at 10% contribution needs $30,000 in blackjack bets, with an expected loss of about $150 at 99.5% RTP. Cashback and no-wagering offers can suit blackjack players better.
