Nauru is a tiny island country in Oceania. The nearest place to it is Kiribati's Banaba Island. It's a microstate with a population of about 10,500. Lying further to it are Tuvalu (northwest), the Solomon Islands (northeast), Papua New Guinea (east-northeast), and the Marshall Islands (south). It has a small land area of about eight square miles, making it the third-smallest country worldwide.
Its former name is Pleasant Island because the first visitor (back in 1798) was so impressed by the comfortable life it offers. The official language in the country is Nauruan. However, because of its close association with the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, most of its residents speak English.
