It is not a member-state of the EU, but it maintains its close relations with it. Norway is one of the founding members of the UN, NATO, the Council of Europe, the European Free Trade Association, the Nordic Council, and it is a member of the WTO and the OECD.
Norway provides universal health care for its citizens, as well as a comprehensive social security system. Norway has strong reserves of petroleum, minerals, seafood and freshwater, and it is ranked as the number one producer of oil and natural gas outside of the Middle East.
Norway also ranks first for having the highest Human Development Index, as well as having the highest inequality-adjusted ranking. The World Happiness Report also has Norway as the number one state, together with being first in the Freedom Index and the Democracy Index. It is worth noting that Norway has one of the lowest crime rates in the entire world.
