The Three Classic Formats: European, American, and French

Every live roulette variant builds on one of three classic formats. Understanding the differences between European, American, and French roulette is the foundation for evaluating everything else on this page.

European Roulette

European roulette is the standard single-zero format used in most live casinos worldwide. The wheel has 37 pockets: numbers 1 through 36 plus a single zero. The house edge is 2.70%, and the RTP is 97.30%. No special rules apply. All standard inside bets (straight-up, split, street, corner, line) and outside bets (red/black, odd/even, high/low, dozens, columns) are available.

  • Pockets: 37 (1–36, 0)
  • House edge: 2.70%
  • RTP: 97.30%
  • Zeroes: 1
  • Ideal for: The default choice for most players. Best balance of house edge, availability, and simplicity.

American Roulette

American roulette adds a double-zero pocket (00) alongside the single zero, creating 38 pockets. This nearly doubles the house edge to 5.26%. The additional pocket does not increase payout odds, which means players face worse math for the same payouts. Some American tables offer a "five bet" covering 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3, which carries a 7.89% house edge, the worst bet on any roulette table. Explore our dedicated guide to get more insights into the differences between American and European roulette.

  • Pockets: 38 (1–36, 0, 00)
  • House edge: 5.26%
  • RTP: 94.74%
  • Zeroes: 2
  • Ideal for: Players who specifically prefer the American format. Not recommended when European or French tables are available.

French Roulette

French roulette uses the same 37-pocket single-zero wheel as European roulette but adds two player-favorable rules. La partage returns half your even-money bet when the ball lands on zero. En prison holds your even-money bet for the next spin when zero hits. These rules reduce the house edge on even-money bets (red/black, odd/even, high/low) to 1.35%, the lowest of any roulette variant available in a live casino.

  • Pockets: 37 (1–36, 0)
  • House edge: 2.70% standard; 1.35% on even-money bets with la partage/en prison
  • RTP: 97.30% / 98.65%
  • Ideal for: Even-money bet players seeking the lowest possible house edge in live roulette.

Speed and Automation Roulette Variants

Speed and automation variants change the pace and delivery of live roulette without altering the rules or house edge. Both use single-zero European wheels with a 2.70% house edge.

Speed Roulette

Speed Roulette compresses the betting window and spin cycle, so rounds are much shorter than at a standard live table. Evolution's Speed Roulette, released in 2018, was the first major implementation. The rules, bets, and 2.70% house edge are identical to European roulette. Only the pace changes.

  • House edge: 2.70%
  • Wheel: Single-zero European
  • Format: Live dealer
  • Ideal for: Experienced players who want more rounds per hour. Not recommended for beginners still learning bet placement.

Auto Roulette

Auto Roulette uses a real physical wheel but no human dealer. The wheel spins automatically at fixed intervals, and optical sensors read the results. Our game page lists Evolution's Auto Live Roulette from $0.20. Speed Auto Roulette combines both concepts, shortening the betting window further.

  • House edge: 2.70%
  • Wheel: Automated single-zero
  • Format: No dealer
  • Ideal for: Players who want the fastest pace and lowest minimums, or RNG players transitioning to a real wheel.

Cinematic and Immersive Roulette Variants

Cinematic variants enhance the visual presentation of standard roulette without changing the rules or house edge. They are designed for players who want a premium viewing experience alongside their bets.

Immersive Roulette (Evolution)

Immersive Roulette uses multiple high-definition cameras and slow-motion replays of the ball landing on the wheel. The game follows standard European roulette rules with a 2.70% house edge and no rule changes. Evolution Gaming describes it as designed to offer "a sophisticated twist to the classic European Roulette," and the multi-camera presentation provides closer observation of wheel and ball motion than any other format.

  • Cameras: Multi-angle HD with slow-motion replay
  • House edge: 2.70%
  • Wheel: Single-zero European
  • Ideal for: Players who want the most visually premium standard roulette experience.

Double Ball Roulette (Evolution)

Double Ball Roulette uses a patented device to launch two balls onto the wheel simultaneously, producing two winning numbers per spin. Standard inside and outside bets are available with adjusted payouts reflecting the increased probability of winning. A unique side bet pays 1,300:1 if both balls land on the same number. The RTP is 97.30%, and the house edge averages 2.70% on standard bets.

  • Balls per spin: 2
  • House edge: ~2.70%
  • Wheel: Single-zero European
  • Ideal for: Players seeking novelty and higher inside-bet payout potential.

Multiplier and Hybrid Roulette Variants

Multiplier variants layer random payout multipliers onto standard European roulette, creating hybrid games that blend traditional table mechanics with slot-style bonus potential. Each provider's implementation differs in multiplier range, qualifying bets, and payout structure.

Lightning Roulette (Evolution)

Lightning Roulette applies random multipliers of 50x, 100x, 200x, 300x, 400x, or 500x to between one and five straight-up numbers on every spin. To compensate, standard straight-up payouts are reduced from 35:1 to 29:1 on non-multiplied numbers. The RTP is 97.30%.

  • Multipliers: 50x–500x on straight-up bets
  • Standard straight-up payout: 29:1 (reduced from 35:1)
  • House edge: 2.70%
  • RTP: 97.30%
  • Ideal for: Players who want multiplier upside on top of standard roulette. Popular with both roulette veterans and slot players.

PowerUP Roulette (Pragmatic Play)

PowerUP Roulette adds PowerUP bonus rounds with random multipliers on straight-up numbers. Standard European roulette rules apply with a single-zero wheel. Our game page lists it from €0.10.

  • House edge: ~2.70%
  • Wheel: Single-zero European
  • Ideal for: Slot players transitioning to live roulette and players at Pragmatic Play-powered casinos.

Mega Fire Blaze Roulette (Playtech)

Mega Fire Blaze Roulette triggers a bonus round when the ball lands on a designated fire number. All inside bets qualify for the bonus, not just straight-up numbers, which differentiates it from Lightning Roulette, where only straight-up bets receive multipliers. A standard European roulette wheel is used, with a live dealer manually spinning it.

High-Stakes and Low-Stakes Roulette Tables

Stake-based variants use the same European roulette rules and 2.70% house edge as standard tables. What changed is the betting range, the studio presentation, and the level of exclusivity.

High-Stakes Roulette Tables

VIP and high-limit tables raise both minimums and maximums; our game pages list Evolution's Immersive Roulette up to €75,000 and Auto Live Roulette up to $20,000. Evolution's Grand Casino Roulette and Pragmatic Play's Live VIP Roulette The Club are the most prominent high-stakes formats, offering premium studio environments and professional dealers trained for VIP-level play.

  • Ideal for: High rollers who want elevated limits and premium presentation.

Low-Stakes Roulette Tables

Low-stakes tables start at $0.10 or €0.10 on our game pages, for example Mega Roulette, Auto Mega Roulette and Ruleta Automatica. See our guide to low-stakes live roulette.

  • Ideal for: Beginners, budget-conscious players, and RNG players transitioning to live dealer.

Provider-Branded Roulette Game Editions

Beyond the core variants, major software providers release branded or localized editions that layer cultural themes, language-specific dealers, or visual styling onto standard European roulette rules. These editions do not change the house edge (still 2.70%) or the core mechanics. What they change is the presentation, the language, and the studio environment.

  • Grand Casino Roulette (Evolution). Luxury land-based casino setting with professional dealers and high-quality streaming. European rules. Minimum bet from €1.
  • Live Indian Roulette (Pragmatic Play). Native Hindi-speaking dealers in an Indian-themed studio. European rules, minimum bets from approximately €0.20.
  • K-Pop Roulette Live (Playtech). Korean Pop Music theme with enthusiastic hosts and a simplified betting interface. European rules.
  • Dansk Roulette (Evolution). Danish-speaking dealers for the Danish market. European rules.
  • Ruleta Automatica (Evolution). Spanish-language auto roulette for Latin American markets. Automated wheel with €0.20 minimum. RTP 97.30%.

All branded editions use European roulette rules unless explicitly stated otherwise. The house edge remains 2.70%. The value of branded editions is accessibility and cultural comfort, not mathematical advantage.

French roulette is the best choice for even-money bets to optimize pure house edge. European roulette is the right default for the broadest availability and simplest format. Multiplier variants add entertainment value at the cost of reduced standard straight-up payouts (29:1 instead of 35:1 on Lightning Roulette, for example), which is a trade-off worth understanding before you sit down.
