Lithuania’s gambling laws are quite new, and the market is still not developed, but the current legislation doesn’t seem to allow any progress to be made in that field. On paper, the situation regarding online gambling is legal, but it doesn’t seem progressive at all.
All online casinos that wish to obtain a license from the regulatory body need to have a partnership with a land-based casino licensed in Lithuania. This is a major obstacle for most of the international online casinos that were planning to enter the Lithuanian market.
Lithuanian’s see online gambling as a good hobby to have, and they were the driving force behind the change in legislation in 2016 when online gambling was finally allowed. However, the situation at the moment means that there are not many active and licensed online casinos in the country, so Lithuanian punters have no option but to try their luck at offshore sites that accept players from their country.
Luckily for them, there are tons of online casinos that are happy to have Lithuanian players, and even though the government tries to block those sites, there are no punishments in place for individual players that access these online casinos.
Another stumbling block when it comes to the sites that are eyeing a license in Lithuania is the high taxation system that is imposed on them upon getting the license. All in all, these regulations favor the domestic operators, but it does affect the quality of the gambling sites for the players in the country.
It doesn’t seem likely that the government will make any changes to the law, despite pressure from the EU, so Lithuanians will probably have to keep playing at offshore online casinos to get their desired quality and quantity of games.
