Kiribati is actually made up of 32 atolls and a smaller island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The nation consists of three groups of islands. The Gilbert Islands contains 16 populated atolls. Also, the Phoenix Islands has eight atolls with no population. The Line Islands sit to the East and have three main islands with people on them. These are Christmas Island, Washington Island, and Fanning Island. Kiribati is spread over a long distance, and the islands are usually two meters below sea level. The islands are at the mercy of climate change and shifting conditions. Kiribati's population is around 115,000, and the atoll of Tarawa is the capital.
